The Chapel Hill Police Department released additional photos Monday of a possible suspect in Eve Carson’s murder.
Carson, former student body president and senior at UNC-Chapel Hill, was found shot to death early March 5, and the University community has been grieving since.
Police Chief Brian Curran said the two new photos came from an area convenience store. They display one black man, who was the only person in the store at the time, trying to use Carson’s ATM card.
Police believe this is the same man seen using an ATM in what they believe to be Carson’s Toyota Highlander in photos released Saturday. The suspect was also using Carson’s ATM card in that photo.
“It appears to us to be the person in the [previous] photo,” Curran said.
The Chapel Hill Police have been working with the FBI, SBI and several other investigative organizations in trying to solve this case, Curran said.
Over the weekend, they received 200 calls on their Crime Stoppers hotline with people providing information about the incident.
Police said they were investigating the possibility of a second person being present in the back of the car seen in the first photos Sunday, as there is a dark figure obscuring what would be the back seat.
They have worked to enhance the photo, but Curran said he does not believe Carson was also in the car at the time of the photo.
Police have run a forensic analysis of Carson’s car, and Curran said evidence from that is being catalogued.
Curran also said people have raised questions about whether the crime could be gang related, but he said he could not confirm that without knowing the suspect’s identity.
“A gang connection would just be speculation on my part,” he said.
And Curran emphasized the murder “still feels like a random crime.”
The UNC Board of Trustees has pledged a $25,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest in the case.
