An attempted robbery outside Doak Field Wednesday evening became the third crime of its kind on campus in the past week and a half and the second within a week at or near the baseball stadium.
The attempted robbery of N.C. Central University student David Johnson Wednesday was the second crime near the baseball stadium within a week.
According to Johnson, a freshman in biology, he had dropped his girlfriend off at Sullivan Residence Hall after a military formal Wednesday evening.
Johnson said he was attempting to load some items into his vehicle parked near a row of pine trees in the Doak Stadium parking lot when the assailant came up behind him and threw Johnson against the vehicle.
After defending himself, Johnson said he immediately drove over to the Campus Police station where he reported the incident to officers.
Campus Police called in the Raleigh Police Department and a few K9 units to aid in the investigation, he said.
According to the Campus Police report, the suspect is a 6-foot-2-inch male with a dark complexion between the ages of 20 and 25.
Johnson said he has frequented the N.C. State campus on numerous occasions and Wednesday’s incident was the first time he has felt unsafe.
“It’s bad everywhere [on all college campuses],” he said. “It just happens everywhere. You just have to be careful.”
Campus Police included safety tips in its crime alert report and Johnson agreed that exercising caution was vital.
“Don’t walk alone,” he said. “Or if you do walk alone, carry something with you like a big stick or pepper spray so you can protect yourself.”
Investigation is ongoing. Johnson will meet with an investigator for the case today.
