Wild West wear isn’t just for cowboys anymore.
From leather boots to flashy belt buckles, what was once worn out to work in the barn has evolved into a fashionable style of today, according to Molly Russell, a freshman in fashion and textile management, as well as a connoisseur of fashion. She describes how agricultural clothes have developed into a chic trend.
“Cowboy boots were originally used for riding horses and working, but now I see people wearing red ones around N.C. State’s campus,” Russell said. “They aren’t just for Texas anymore.”
Fashion designer Marc Jacobs has recently collaborated with notable western clothier Wrangler to design a line of reinvented western pieces. The results were a modern rendition of the classic, cowboy denim design.Another popular look with the ever-evolving western wear, Russell notes, is layering a flannel print with other styles of shirts.
“It’s very laid back and comfortable,” Russell said.
However, there is a distinct difference between Western wear and agricultural wear.
“Western wear is more of a Sunday’s best or night out on the town,” Steven Calloway, a junior in agriculture education, said. “It has more of a flash and dash to it.”
Agricultural wear, as Calloway describes, is more practical. An everyday outfit can be created from a worn out pair of Carhartt pants, a comfortable shirt and an old pair of boots — a look that can easily be worn straight to the farm.
Calloway explains that the popular Carhartt jackets are able to “take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’.” These jackets are both popular and trendy — they have wide pockets to hold tools, they keep the vaquero warm and they will stand up against the job.
However, agricultural wear isn’t just for the farm. It can be personalized to fit individual style.
Kristen Gossett, a senior in extension education, decided to spice up her wardrobe by adding a custom-made belt buckle.
“In high school I used to judge livestock and my team won the state championship for livestock judging my senior year,” Gossett said. “I had been together with my team since freshman year of high school, so all the girls on it decided to get belt buckles designed.”
Although New York City’s Naked Cowboy may have taken the fashion of Western wear to an extreme — his normal ensemble includes a snazzy pair of boots, cowboy hat and briefs — the everyday person can easily incorporate pieces of flair by adding in pair of Wranglers or Western-inspired belt into an outfit.
This style of clothing, Calloway said, “personifies the people who wear it and is another aspect that helps make you who you are.”
