A trail of smoke floated above University Towers Tuesday, and it left passers-by concerned about a possible fire, according to Clayton Hayer, general manager.
At approximately 11:35 a.m., employees at University Towers were cooking a high number of hamburgers for lunch, which Hayer said produced smoke that exited out of the cooking vents.
“I guess the smoke was more visible than usual,” Hayer said.
People driving on Hillsborough Street and walking by the facility noticed an unusual amount of smoke and called the Raleigh Fire Department, he said.
“The fire department showed up at the middle of lunch,” he said. “They had their coats on and hoses on their shoulders.”
But when the firefighters went to the kitchen and realized the smoke was just coming from the grill, they said everything was fine.
“It wasn’t plumes of smoke, it was just what you would see coming from a vent system over a charcoal grill,” Hayer said.
The fire department was only there for 10 minutes, he said, and because the fire alarm was not pulled, no one was forced to evacuate the building.
