As spring break approaches, many of us are planning to go off to the Bahamas for relaxation, participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip or going home to catch up with old friends.
For most, this break seems always to come at just the right time of the semester, with the wave of exams just finishing and the need to get away from the normal daily grind mounting. However, once we return from spring break, campaign signs will proliferate the campus, and candidates will turn every inch of campus into ad space.
Therefore, before you leave for spring break I would like to tell you all thanks for giving me the opportunity to serve as your student body president. From day one of my term, my team has advocated for the major improvements on campus that I had promised in my platform: extended tailgating hours, debit/credit card access on campus and extended dining hall hours.
All of these promises have been accomplished (and will continue to be expanded) throughout my term, but they would not have been so without the help of many others. There have also been many other major accomplishments that we have been a part of throughout the year, such as the implementation of Reading Days, Halloween on Hillsborough Street Transit, a guaranteed textbook buyback program and “B-Ballin’ at the Old Barn.”
With these accomplishments we have surely faced hurdles, but these hurdles have made us stronger. Recently we disagreed with the administration about how many tickets to supply for Campout. We had 3,200 students signed up for Campout but only 2,800 tickets. Precedent dictated that half of the tickets should go toward Campout, with the other half to go toward the general lottery. My thoughts were that 2,500 to 2,700 tickets be allocated for Campout to allow the Ram’s Roast participants to receive tickets as well.
However, by the time we found out about the administration wanting to give half of the tickets to Campout, it was too late to change what had been conveyed to registrants. Therefore, we conversed with the administration throughout the night securing all of the tickets needed for Campout and agreeing to evaluate the Campout policy in the future. We will be discussing this issue with the administration the week after spring break, so if you have any input on this issue, please let us know.
Some of these issues impact you in a small way, but collectively we feel that all of these issues have led to a major improvement of campus life. I will continue to fight for the important issues of students that will improve N.C. State until my very last day in office. Thank you again for allowing me serve you and if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
