Less than a week after wearing the pink jerseys for the Hoops for Hope game against Boston College, N.C. State won another in the uniforms — this time taking down Miami on Thursday night in Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack led by as many as 12 points in the first half, before Miami came back and took a one-point halftime lead, 28-27. State returned in the second half with a changed defensive attitude — holding Miami to 17 points and no free throws in the half.
Coach Kay Yow said she was pleased with the win and it was one her team needed.
“It was a big win for us because a win by Miami would have tied them with us,” Yow said. “By winning this game, we put a little distance between us and them. Everybody has tough games to play all the way around, so it’s impossible to know how anything is going to turn out.”
Yow said her team’s defense in the second half helped with the team’s win.
“Defensively, second half — I think you can see holding a team like Miami, a team that loves to run and put up the shots, holding them to 17 points,” she said. “That’s quite a feat for this team.”
Junior guard Shayla Fields led the team with 16 points while going for another 40-minute night. Senior forward Khadijah Whittington had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Whittington hurt her hand in the first half but did return before halftime.
“Coach kept telling me to post up and I just did what she told me to do and my teammates did a good job of getting me the ball when I was open,” Whittington said. “Our guards stepped up and shot pretty well. I do what I can when I can do it.”
Fields said rest was a factor in her performance.
“I just get a good amount of rest and I just try to stay injury free and do what I have to do,” Fields said. “When I get more tired, I’m not able to use as much [of] my legs. I have to use my legs with my shot.”
Because it’s “Think Pink” week through Sunday, the team plans on wearing the jerseys a little while longer, but will eventually go back to the regular jerseys, according to Yow.
“Its ‘Think Pink’ week across the country,” Yow said.
“Today, and at Wake Forest is ‘Think Pink’ day for them. We’ll wear them there, and then our next game will be North Carolina. I’ll think you’ll see the red and white. ‘Think Pink’ week will be over and I’ll think you’ll see a lot of red that day.”
