Although Monday was the first day to file intent to run for student body positions in Student Government, the Web site was not up and information packets were not easily accessible, according to some candidates.
According to Student Senate President Greg Doucette, the Web site for candidates to file was not up because the webmaster has a lot on his plate and did not have time to delegate the job to someone else.
In addition to the Web site problems, paper packet copies were also unavailable, Doucette said.
John Mickey, a junior in business management, filed Monday despite these conditions.
“I came into Witherspoon around 10:30ish and I went into the SG office and I asked for an elections packet,” Mickey said. “[The Student Government Adviser] Anne Alchele didn’t know where they were and if they were ready yet.”
So, Mickey filled out the paperwork from a draft of the packet that he received by e-mail, got an envelope from another administrator and asked her to stamp the received date on it, he said.
Then, according to Mickey, he waited for a student senator to let him into the office and he pinned the application on Achele’s door.
“It was filing day for student body elections and I thought they would at least have an elections packet printed,” Mickey said. “But I mean they weren’t and there wasn’t any place to put them. I thought it was a little unprofessional.”
According to Student Body President Bobby Mills, he was unable to file for re-election Monday.
“I tried to file today,” Mills said. “I went by and [the packet] wasn’t there.”
And Mills said the problem did not seem like it would be solved today.
“I talked to the Elections Commission chair and he hasn’t been in the position long enough, so [the Web site] is not going to be open till Wednesday at the latest,” Mills said.
Mills said he hopes the Commission will extend the already shortened filing period by two days because of this inconvenience.
But Doucette said that is not a likely scenario, and that filing would continue to be open until next Monday as scheduled.
“There’s still a few days left,” he said.
Doucette filed Monday evening for re-election as Student Senate president.
According to Doucette, the Senate shortened the period for filing and campaigning, so that the student body wouldn’t have to deal with elections for as long a period.
Mills said he tried to veto that legislation but was overruled.
Voting has also been shortened to one day instead of two, according to Mills.
Part of the reason for this miscommunication about filing, Doucette said, is because six of the elections commissioners have yet to be confirmed by the Senate.
Mills said his worry is that not enough people know about elections because there hasn’t been much advertising, especially to people outside of Student Government.
But Doucette said he plans to counter that problem by getting the commissioners to set up a Facebook event about filing.
“A lot of folks will tell their friends,” he said.
As of 9 p.m. Monday night, eight people had filed for office.
