Athletes took part in the second annual Athletes With Talent Charity Show Monday night in the Campus Cinema to raise money for Kids Cafe.
“As long as you can go out and help kids with anything you do, it’s really big,” Owen Spencer, a sophomore wide receiver, said. “It’s big for the community, the school and for you as an individual.”
The Student Athlete Advisory Council organized the event, which raised money for the Kids Cafe charity, an afternoon program that provides tutoring and free meals and snacks to low-income children.
“It’s good that athletes are willing to take their time to showcase their talents, having a little fun and being creative out there, all for a good charity,” Spencer said.
Spencer won the award for most talented by singing the popular wedding song “At Last” by Etta James.
“I don’t want to be cocky, but I knew I was going to win,” Spencer said. “Last year, I couldn’t really do it because I had a lab, but this year people were asking me to do it, so I just came out and had a little fun.”
The 11-event show had acts ranging from a spin-off of a scene from the movie White Chicks by the women’s basketball and softball teams to a choreographed rendition of Super Mario by the women’s swimming team.
“There’s a lot of work you put into athletics, lifting and running six days a week, and on top of that you’re going to school at a prestigious institution, such as N.C. State, but at the same time you have to find time to have fun with your teammates,” Cameron Conner, a freshman baseball infielder, said.
Conner, along with the rest of the men’s baseball team claimed the award for most amusing act with their musical ensemble and dance routine.
“We had a great supporting cast and a huge fan base,” Conner said. “Overall though, there was a lot more talent out there than I expected.”
Conner said he would be willing to participate in another awards show if there is one next year.
“I Probably would do it next year,” Conner said. “I had fun with it,” he said. “I don’t think it’s ever going to be too serious, though.”
