After initially being indicted for first-degree murder in March, the two men accused of killing former UNC-Chapel Hill Student Body President Eve Carson were indicted on numerous other charges on Monday.
Student Body President Jay Dawkins said he hopes that the upcoming trial will bring some type of closure to the tragedy which shocked campuses across the state and country.
“The best thing that can happen at this point is for a speedy trial in which justice is served,” he said. “That’s the best outcome we could have from here for everyone involved.”
According to the most recent indictment, released Tuesday, both Demario Atwater, 21, and Laurence Lovette, 17, were indicted on charges of armed robbery, first-degree kidnapping, felonious larceny and possession of stolen goods. Atwater was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
The next step in the case is scheduled to take place Aug. 11, when a Rule 24 hearing will be held to determine whether or not Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall will pursue the death penalty against Atwater. Lovette is too young to face the possibility of death.
The possibility of Atwater facing the death penalty may have been bolstered on Monday with the new indictment.
