Reynolds was rockin’ Friday night.
But 583 fans weren’t packing “the house that Case built” for hoops action, a gymnastics meet or even a wrestling match. No, for the first time since 2001, the Old Barn was alive because of an ACC N.C. State volleyball victory.
History was made in historic Reynolds Coliseum as the Wolfpack defeated Boston College, the last conference foe State beat back in 2005, 3-1, ending a 56-match ACC losing streak. Every fan in the arena was standing as Boston College’s Brittany Pierpont’s serve went into the net and fell to the hardwood. Chaos ensued on State’s side of the court as the entire team celebrated at the attack line.
“It was refreshing to know [the crowd was] there behind us,” freshman libero Kelly Wood said.
Wood and sophomore Nikki Sweet both had 15 digs in the four set match, while junior Arlee Tamietti and lone senior Aiwane Iboaya had 11 and 10 kills respectively. And while the win was especially sweet for the team’s only senior, she said the victory wasn’t only for State.
“It’s not for us, because we know we can do it,” Iboaya said. “It’s for our fans, for the school and for other teams that play us.”
Head coach Charita Stubbs echoed Iboaya’s appreciation for the fans.
“It’s very exciting,” Stubbs said. “The crowd helped us so much, standing up and cheering. Up until today, this crowd hadn’t seen an ACC win at home, so it was exciting.”
While the win represented the end to a 56-match struggle, Stubbs put it into perspective and noted it did not change the way opponents would approach matches.
“We know people still don’t want to lose to us,” Stubbs said. “No one wants to be the second team to [lose] to N.C. State. We’ll celebrate [tonight], but tomorrow no one cares. On Sunday, it’s really important for us to step up.”
Co-captain Alex Smith had a match-high 33 assists and two service aces. The sophomore said the team’s win was due mostly to the prowess of hitters Tamietti, and Iboaya.
