Campus Rec was able to pull off the first annual intramural flag football combine on Thursday night without the hindrance of rain and cloudy skies. The event featured five combine events to simulate gameplay and test skills used in the game of flag football.
Jason Spivey, assistant director of intramural sports, found the combine to be a “good success.”
“I think it went pretty well,” Spivey said. “We had everyone doing the different events, [and it] seems like everything’s gone smooth. We had steady competition at each activity.”
Spivey is looking forward to next year’s combine and plans on expanding the event with more activities.
“We will do it again next year, no doubt. We’ll look to improve it, make additions to it so we’re adding something to enhance it every year and making it more fun,” Spivey said.
Michael Jones, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, showed his competitive side at the combine.
“It was good; a lot of people showed up,” Jones said. “I wish I could run the forty [yard dash] again, just so I could beat the dude that just beat my time. But it was fun, they should definitely do it again next year.”
Korede Aiyegbusi, a junior in sport management and soccer player, is not able to play on a flag football team but still came out and enjoyed the combine.
“I was walking past with my friends and walked in,” Aiyegbusi said. “It’s good for people to come and have fun — to just stop by and do it.”
Aiyegbusi, who ran the forty yard dash in 4.8 seconds, enjoyed the fun competition that the combine provided.
“It makes people work hard,” Aiyegbusi said. “If they hear about a record, they try to beat it. It’s about just having having fun with your friends.”
Kristina Boyce, a senior in sport management, was among the few girls who attended the combine.
“It was great, I had a great time,” Boyce said. “It’s kinda sad. There was only two or three other girls, so I would like to see more girls. But it was really fun and challenging.”
