Homecoming Week is the most exciting week for fans, students and alumni of the University and it is coming in full force this year. In short, there’s a lot to like about Homecoming.
For one, I’m a big fan of Wear Red, Get Fed. Wearing something red is possibly the easiest way to show school spirit, and participants can receive spirit points. There’s no catch, no signing contracts or playing silly games to get food. Besides, red looks good on everyone – light blue, not so much.
The Homecoming Parade is another great opportunity to see the University’s most prominent athletic representatives of State: coaches, athletes, cheerleaders and my boyfriend’s personal favorite – the dance team, which he gazes at during every game he attends. Friday’s parade is also a time to hoard candy and other free stuff that people on floats pelt at attendants. The parade will also feature local bands, and this is a great way to see all the local talent in the Triangle.
As far as music goes, students have complained about the artists State has booked for the Pack Howl Concert in the past couple years. Common and N*E*R*D. are a blessing for them. State has obviously listened to students and they’ve given them what they wanted: musical artists with name recognition and talent.
Seeing N*E*R*D* and Common in a concert anywhere else could set you back $32 to $73. Buying tickets in advance for Friday’s concert with student identification will only cost $10. Even if students waited till the last minute to buy one, it will only cost $15, a fair trade for seeing such popular artists.
I applaud the University for getting such incredible artists to come to Reynolds Coliseum. Though I’m sure Guster and the Avett Brothers, last year’s Pack Howl Concert artists, make good music, this year’s artists can appeal to a bigger audience which is appropriate for a university with more than 30,000 students.
Fans, students and alumni of N.C. State are known for being some of the most intense tailgaters in the state.
That same energy and enthusiasm fans have while tailgating should skyrocket once the game begins. I have faith that our football team will shoot down the Boston College Eagles. The energy our team will feed off of will replicate our victory over Virginia last Homecoming. Carter-Finley is an intimidating arena, and it should be especially daunting when BC’s football team walks into a stadium covered in red and white fans eager to see a Wolfpack victory.
Besides the free food and great opportunities students have, Homecoming provides opportunities for students to give back. Talley is hosting a blood drive and bone marrow typing Friday and those who participate can receive spirit points.
Of course, I haven’t mentioned even half of the great things that are going on during Homecoming week, which just shows that State is working hard to please its students. I love N.C. State, and Homecoming week is proof that it loves me back.
