#4 Roman GabrielQuarterback
Gabriel anchored the Wolfpack’s offense from 1959 to 1961, and remained the face of the program throughout the 1960s as a professional player. By today’s standards, Gabriel’s numbers aren’t outstanding. In his career, Gabriel threw for just 2,951 yards completing 19 touchdowns compared to 20 interceptions. But his passing numbers were almost all school records at the time, and he was among those that began to redefine the game in an era were the rushing attack was foremost.
In his first season as starting quarterback, he led the NCAA with a completion percentage of .604. His next season, Gabriel ranked 8th nationally in total offense, throwing for 1,182 yards–his only 1000 plus season–and running for 164 yards. As a senior, Gabriel ranked 14th nationally in total offense, throwing for eight touchdowns and just six interceptions.
Gabriel earned ACC Player of the Year honors in both 1960 and 1961. As a professional, he earned three trips to the PRO Bowl and was named the NFL’s MVP in 1969.
