A few of the winners from years past show off their techniques for consuming the dozen doughnuts it takes to finish the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Maybe you can be the next one to join the ranks of those who have come before…
Auburn StaplesSenior, geologyPreferred method: Rapid mash
Auburn Staples says he runs 18 to 20 miles a day. So two miles to Krispy Kreme and two miles back to the Bell Tower? It’s a piece of cake. The harder part for Staples is eating the dozen doughnuts. Staples won the race last year with a time of 24 minutes and 32 seconds, but had fallen behind in the doughnut portion of the race. After eating them one-by-one, Staples decided it was time to get serious. He mashed them up, dunked them in water, devoured the doughnuts and won the race.
Kylie GoodellSenior, industrial engineeringPreferred method: Dry fold
Kylie Goodell is admittedly a bit embarassed by her doughnut eating success. “Girls aren’t supposed to be able to do this,” she says. But Goodell has become a sort of pioneer for other female runners hoping to accomplish the dozen doughnut feat. And one thing she is proud of is being the first runner to throw up her doughnuts up on the Bell Tower. “They were checking my number, and it just came back out,” Goodell said. And her eating method is simple — fold and scarf.
Andrew MisenheimerSophomore, mechanical engineeringPreferred method: The Hot Dog
Andrew Misenheimer is a competitive eater of sorts. He’s downed chili cheeseburgers and chicken wings with the best of them, taking techniques from professionals. So when it came down to him eating a dozen doughnuts after a two-mile run, Misenheimer said he was ready for the challenge, adopting the style of rolling up the doughnuts and drowning them in water. “I kind of go the idea from the hot dog eaters at Coney Island,” Misenheimer said. “Those guys can really eat.”
