One of my favorite things about college is how there is something for everyone. Whether your idea of a good time is swing dancing or hunting, there is a place to do it and a group of fun people with similar interests. I love the freedom to give things a try and the excitement that comes from trying something new.
Seeing as this is still very near the beginning of the semester, there is not a more perfect time to find that special something that is missing in your life. In a perfect world, you would all be happy with the way your college experience is going.
We all have moments where we consider trying something new, where we wonder if this could be the thing that makes you feel like you have finally found your niche. Maybe you’ve wanted to play an instrument, learn Chinese or talk to someone new and interesting.
It can be a bit daunting, but really, that is part of the beauty of going to such a big school. If you check out a few clubs or events that just don’t turn out to be exactly what you had hoped for, you can safely avoid the embarrassment of seeing every active club member in the hallways like you would in high school.
Another wonderful thing about the sheer size of N.C. State is that there is so much variety for those looking to get involved there can be no excuse for not finding something you enjoy.
I really want to encourage you to dig deeper to find your perfect fit. On the surface you may see the typical and traditional college activities, but there is so much more available to you that you shouldn’t just assume that you aren’t going to find what you are looking for in an extracurricular activity.
Regrets are, in my opinion, the worst sort of recollections. Far worse than the remembrance of some terrible event which was outside of your control is the sinking feeling there was something you should have done differently.
Branching out and trying something new can be a really easy way to avoid suffering from regrets about what your college days could or should have been.
Don’t be discouraged if you try a few things that don’t work out, persistence is important and variety is the spice of life. College is such a fun time for experimenting with all of your interests and talents and I’d hate to think of any one of those going to waste.
The important thing is that at the end of your college career you can look back, contently knowing you explored every avenue your interests drew you down, and that in doing so you learned who you are and what you are about.
