With one sweep already in the its bag, the No. 40 women’s tennis team duplicated its performance against Elon — this time against Davidson on Friday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
With the exception of a close victory at the No. 3 doubles for Davidson, the Pack (2-0) dominated every facet of the match as the Wildcats (1-1) had no answer in doubles or singles matches.
“We all just came out strong in our doubles matches and were hungry for each point,” junior Neils Barringer said. “We all came out ready to compete and focused on starting strong.”
The Pack opened up the match with decisive victories in doubles with sophomore Berkeley Brock and sophomore Daria Petrovic toppling their opponents at the No. 1 position 8-3. The Pack continued to roll when senior Julia Roach and freshman Lenka Hojckova swept their opponents 8-0 — securing the doubles point for the Pack.
No. 79 Petrovic handled her opponent in straight sets to jumpstart the Pack in singles play. The team never looked back from there as No. 97 Berkeley Brock won her sets easily 6-1, 6-3 — clinching the match for the Pack.
“We all came out in singles ready to compete, and that’s what we’ve been strongly working on,” Barringer said. “And that’s what we did against Davidson.”
With a win already secured, Roach won her match 6-3, 7-6. Sophomore Catherine Grotz took her match with 6-3, 6-1 sets, with Barringer in the No. 6 spot winning her match 6-3, 6-2.
Barringer commented on how she maintained her focus even though she knew the win was clinched.
“If we do get down to the point where it does come down to the last match, you have to be able to focus mentally and close out yours,” Barringer said.
The Wolpack will try to continue its success Friday against Marshall at 5 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
