A student was apprehended for breaking and entering Tuesday afternoon and detained at the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, Campus Police Capt. Jon Barnwell said.
Logan Blair, a freshman in First Year College, was seen on video footage entering an office space in Tucker Residence Hall and taking a set of master keys for the building, according to Barnwell.
“Housing uses video [Closed-Circuit TV] that allowed us to catch the suspect on tape,” he said.
A police officer came to Blair’s room in Tucker Wednesday morning and interrogated him about the missing keys, which he initially denied taking, his roommate and fellow freshman in First Year College Michael McDuffie said.
“This morning, I found out [about the suspected breaking and entering] from the police officer,” he said. “[The police] had problem calls that [Blair] did it, and he just stated the situation.”
The officer applied for a search warrant and remained in the room until it arrived at 3 p.m., according to McDuffie
“I didn’t really have any involvement,” he said. “[The police officer] stayed with Logan in the room until about 3 p.m.”
But, McDuffie said, Blair retrieved the stolen set of keys and turned them in before the officer began his search.
Campus Police then apprehended Blair and took him to the Campus Police division while completing interviews and investigations, Barnwell said.
“We had him detained at the station while we were conducting the investigation,” he said.
Blair was transported to the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday evening, where he will await bail, according to Barnwell.
“I do believe this involved some felony charges,” he said. “We will make a judicial referral to Student Conduct and provide them with the facts … and Housing may revoke his residence status.”
Barnwell said the investigation took some time because the department wanted to handle the situation carefully and justly.
“It’s been slow to unfold throughout the day,” he said. “We wanted to conduct a good, thorough investigation.”
He said the only issues he saw resulting from this incident would be “residual problems.”
“It could cause some folks to worry,” Barnwell said.
McDuffie said he was more astonished than worried.
“I was just pretty shocked mostly,” he said, but also said he had talked to one of his RAs about the situation.
And Barnwell said the arrest and detention of Blair should not be cause for alarm.
“We’ve got the situation completely under control,” he said. “It wasn’t a violent crime against a person, and we recovered the keys.”
