There are many fun and rewarding service opportunities on the horizon for N.C. State students, and donating your time to these causes is a good way to help give back to the local community. Volunteering helps students strengthen their ties to the University and make productive use of their spare time.
Pack-A-Thon is accepting registration for its annual Krispy Kreme Challenge fundraiser and over 1,000 racers have already signed up to participate in the event. The event benefits the North Carolina Children’s Hospital and last year was able to raise $10,300 in donations.
Runners start at the Bell tower, run to the Krispy Kreme on Peace Street, eat a dozen doughnuts and then run back. The event is scheduled for Jan. 26 and promises to be bigger and more successful than it has ever been in the past. The race will undoubtedly be an enjoyable time for those who attend and a delicious experience for those who can handle their doughnuts.
While the challenge has boomed in the past few years, it is important that students not get caught up and forget about the many other charitable causes they can support through the University. Another service opportunity quickly approaching is Campus Police’s annual Polar Plunge. This event, scheduled for Feb. 2, raises money for Special Olympics North Carolina.
This is the third year for the event and participants who brave the cold waters of Lake Raleigh will receive a free T-shirt and be eligible to win prizes. Participants must bring at least $50 in donations and can register at 9 a.m. on the day of the event.
The Women’s Basketball team will host its annual Hoops for Hope fundraiser Feb. 10 benefitting breast cancer research, with proceeds going to Susan G. Komen For the Cure, NC Triangle Affiliate.
During that afternoon’s basketball game against Boston College, $5 from the price of each ticket will be donated to the same charitable fund. This event is a great way for Wolfpack fans to show their support for breast cancer survivors, including basketball coach Kay Yow.
The more individuals who donate their time to these kinds of events, the more our University can help those in need. It is important that we maintain the image that this school is unselfish and willing to contribute to the community. We are a public school and are dependent on these good relationships with those outside our bounds to ensure our future.
