The men’s ultimate club is shooting for high marks this year after last season when the team suffered a setback — one that disappointed the team.
“Basically, we had roster issues. First things first: get the roster in on time,” Josh Norris, a senior in civil engineering, said.
As a result of not getting the roster in on time, the team was held out of all post-season tournaments. Members of the team said this was a huge frustration, because they felt the team was good enough to make it far.
“We didn’t get to go to sectionals … for technical reasons. I feel like we would have made nationals, but that’s always how you feel,” Vice President and Captain Evan Bowles, a third-year doctoral student in biomathematics, said.
The final tournaments are divided up into sections. The teams compete in sectionals, then move on to regionals and finally nationals. Bowles said the team had barely missed nationals the year before last, placing fourth in regionals. The top three teams usually make it to the national tournament.
This past season’s impact continues to motivate the players today.
“Last year was a step backwards, obviously with all the technicalities that happened. But I feel like we’re building on that. I know a lot of guys are still thinking about it. I know I am personally,” Thomas Ward, a junior in business management, said.
The team is making it a priority to advance far, and have fun doing it, this season.
“Make every practice count, go hard for three hours every practice. Be dedicated, eat right, train right, throw the Frisbee as much as you can,” Norris said. “And I guess the most important thing is to have fun while you’re out there. I think if you have fun you’re going to be winning.”
Despite the competition, the members spend much of their time together when they aren’t practicing.
“It took me less than a week to become really good friends with them. They all want to help you get better in the future, so that our team can improve,” Dalton Deluca, a freshman in First Year College, said.
The team enters the spring with three tournaments already under its belt. And with the season getting in full swing, how far the club will go will soon be tested. Their next tournament is this weekend.
But the team knows where it wants to be, and has confidence that it can do it.
“[We] have a good chance of not only making it there, but having a good showing there,” Ward said.
