The History Channel will feature the College of Textiles’ Textile Protection and Comfort Center on its Modern Marvels show Monday, June 9 at 8 p.m., according to Emily Parker, director of college relations.
“That exposure for N.C. State and the College of Textiles is very good,” she said.
The show’s producers contacted the College of Textiles and expressed interest in filming Pyroman and sweating mannequins for a segment on “hot stuff,” Shawn Deaton, special projects manager for T-PACC, said.
Pyroman is an instrumented testing system the center uses to test flame-resistant materials, he said.
The mannequin contains sensors that Deaton said can tell the time it takes to reach second-degree burns under different materials to show how protective the materials are.
The center uses a sweating mannequin to show comfort levels of all kinds of clothes, he said. Researchers can measure the heat levels in the mannequin, Deaton said, and it sweats to show how much heat will be lost when wearing certain materials.
The television appearance is a good opportunity to promote University programs to prospective students, Parker said.
“It demonstrates that there’s so much happening in textiles,” she said.
