Helios Coffee Co. to feature “The Future of Food”
Helios Coffee Co. will show the movie “The Future of Food,” which offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade, on Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m.The film talks about the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world’s food system. It also discusses alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis. Community event to benefit Umstead Park
The Umstead Coalition is hosting a Walk/Run/Bike for Umstead Park on April 22 at 10 a.m. The Walk/Run/Bike for the park is an annual community event geared toward the appreciation, use and preservation of William B. Umstead State Park.There will be three-mile and seven-mile guided mountain bike tours that start at 10:15 a.m. There will also be awards and prizes, live music and other events following the race.Funds raised will be used for controlling invasive plants, protecting native wildflowers, environmental education and future land acquisitions for the park.For details or to volunteer, see http://umsteadcoalition.org or call 919-852-2268.
First Year College to break ground
First Year College, in partnership with University Housing, is preparing to break ground on a new building (FYC Commons) that will be placed in what is now the parking lot between Carmichael Gym and Student Health. The Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 25 at 9 a.m. at the site location and will be followed by a reception and comments from the Provost and administration.
Design Projects on display
Electrical and computer engineering seniors will exhibit design projects Thursday, April 27 from 12 to 6 p.m. at the McKimmon Center.
‘Golfing for the Hungry’ Golf Tournament
The Raleigh district United Methodist Church will be sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit various charities on Friday, April 28, starting at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club. The three charities benefiting from the event are the Interfaith Food Shuttle, Urban Ministries of Wake County and Bunn Community Outreach. The cost to participate is $50 per person or $200 per group and the fees include lunch, green fees, cart, goody bag and door prizes. Bennett Place State Historic Site to host living history program
To mark the anniversary of General Johnston’s surrender to General Sherman 141 years ago, Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham will host a living history program on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.The event will feature Civil War soldier drilling demonstrations, camp life presentations and clothing discussions. Costumed interpreters will prepare period foods in the historic kitchen and present typical 19th century domestic skills such as candle dipping throughout the day; children will even have the opportunity to play old-fashioned games.
