Vance Blanton doesn’t have a plan, at least not one that he knows of.
“I don’t know off-hand,” Blanton said of his major platforms, saying instead, “Vote for Democracy, Vote for Vance.”
Blanton has never served on Student Government but said he worked closely with current Student Body President Whil Piavis. He said he is qualified for the position because he is a full-time student and has a desire to run.
“Looking at last year, I see some goods and some bads and I want to take the goods and keep moving forward with them,” he said.
Blanton said if elected he wants to sit down with the leaders and talk about what needs to be done, including getting rid of hidden agendas so work can get done.
“I think there’s a lot of problems with the Senate,” he said, citing a void between Student Government and the administration that he said isn’t necessary. “There doesn’t need to be an underlying hate for the administration.”
Blanton said that Piavis just got funding for the Red Terror, a transportation system to and from home football games, and he wants to evaluate it to see if it needs an increase in funding.
He didn’t offer a platform for tuition and fees issues, saying that students got the short end of the stick.
“As students we can voice our opinions, but we’re kind of tied to Capitol Hill,” he said.
He also believes that Greek organizations are essential life.
“They’re a powerful mass that can be led to do great things and I’m certainly encouraged by them,” he said.
In reference to events and traditions that relate to students, he said that funding is always an issue and he plans to get more and better funding by preparing early.
“I would be a good voice for students,” he said, saying he wouldn’t be in the front trying to get media attention but in the back doing work.
“I think I’ve got a pretty good work-ethic.”
