Changes are an inevitable part of our lives. Changes are welcome, and at times we dread it. It is all a matter of perspective. Irrespective of the situation or place, everyone desires a certain change, be it in politics, technology or for that matter the weather. It is through the inquisitive nature of humankind that one seeks change in the order of betterment of the existing condition. It is due to this inquisitiveness that arouses the craving and eagerness for changes. I am no messiah who hopes to evolve something out of the blue.
Changes offer special invitations to reflect upon our hopes, dreams, disappointments, accomplishments, relationships and goals. Some of these changes, if carefully and realistically planned and implemented, will be successful. Unfortunately, some well-intentioned changes are not realized, fading quickly into the background.
Changing the world is not within our realms, but we can start from within our own territory.
Yes, I am talking about N.C. State. I believe that if you want things to stay as they are, things will have to change. By saying that I want to change something I mean to make it more efficient in some particular way without permanently losing its former characteristics or essence.
I personally feel that the Centennial Campus should be more accessible from any part around the University just like the main campus.
Upon asking Ryan Jordan, a junior in biological science, he stated, “One of my concerns would be safety on campus especially since many of us go to campus to work out at the gym or play basketball later in the day. It used to be three years ago you could walk around campus at night and be fine, but now you need to be mindful of the time.”
Vidyalakshmi Swaminathan, a graduate student in electrical engineering, who works part time in the library said they should have a kiosk on every floor to find books because students can’t always go to a lab to search for popular books.
“They could make the photocopying cheaper inside the libraries,” he said.
Not only students but also administrative staff members feel the need to bring some changes in the present system. Delores Gail Owens, Administrative Secretary II of NCSU Campus Housing, mentioned that she wants more security at the residence halls so that no one except the students and the officials can have access to the building.
Variations and alterations are always acceptable if they are meant for the betterment of the human race. As the tree bears the same fruit year after year, but each time new fruit, in the same way all lastingly valuable ideas in thinking must always be reborn.
An obstacle to change is rooted in the belief, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” While aspiring for changes that we believe would come about constructively, we should also realize that changes won’t come on their own, or by sitting on our couches and criticizing the existing policies, conditions or system; we should remember it is we who can bring about a change. It is within each one of us, when we talk about changes in North Carolina State University and how things are progressing slowly. We should remember that it is from within us students that there would be board members and professors here at the University and if we have the desire to change for good, we will implement it when we get our chance.
