Ultimately, the power rests in the hands of students.
Without the almost 30,000 students attending this fine institution and making the name of this school shine in a multitude of arenas, we could not consider ourselves North Carolina State University. Excelling is what the Wolfpack do best.
No greater example can be found than in the hallowed halls of Witherspoon Student Center.
For those not in the know, the top floor of this building is a home-away-from-home for dedicated members of the Student Media, Student Government and the like. These informed and like-minded students spend countless hours tucked in cubicles, writing feverishly or deliberating with their peers over the most recent legislation. Such individuals shape what you will find in the next day’s news and furthermore into the future.
While you may not realize, Student Government does and will continue to impact your daily life as a student here.
The Student Senate appropriates funds to many worthy organizations and clubs throughout campus. They give out over $90,000 to hundreds of groups. A dedicated committee spends tireless evenings shuffling through hundreds of requests and making sure an array of clubs and groups get the necessary funds to function in the coming year.
It also controls ticket distribution for all our beloved basketball and football events. Every ticket you request is a part of a system set up through the legislation of the Student Senate. We are able to enjoy the Wolfpack at Carter Finley and the RBC Center due in no small part to the efforts of the senators of Student Government.
The Student Body President serves not only as the elected figurehead for the students, but holds a voting seat on the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is a group that governs supremely over all matters of the University. Such influential votes determine issues as varied and relevant as tuition and fees and tailgating criteria. They hire your professors and determine how much it will cost you to attend NCSU next year.
Therefore, when a student goes to the polls and casts his or her vote, they are determining the leaders who will make these future decisions. Hopefully, you as students desire to have the best and brightest leaders leading on your behalf.
There are 105 qualified candidates and every last one of them needs you to share your voice and opinion.
