After shutting out Maryland in the ACC Tournament’s first round, the No. 38 women’s tennis team (16-9) had its own match drought, losing 4-0 to top-seeded Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.
The No. 10 Yellow Jackets quickly took the doubles point, as the Pack’s Nandita Chandrasekar and Elin Stahl Johanson lost 8-3, and Julia Roach and Shona Lee lost their match 8-2, giving Georgia Tech a 1-0 match lead.
State’s top-seeded doubles pair, Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra, did not get the chance to finish their doubles match, as the Pack had already lost the overall doubles point.
In singles matches, Orlay lost to the No. 1 player in the nation in Tech’s Kristi Miller 6-0, 6-2.
Chandrasekar and freshman Neils Barringer were the other two State losses, giving the Jackets the 4-0 lead and ending the match early.
Roach, Guerra and Lee did not get the chance to finish, with Lee being the only one ahead at the time the overall match ended.
The Pack’s 16 wins on the season ties the school record, and Thursday’s win over Maryland marked its first postseason win since 1998. State will now wait to see whether it will be awarded with an NCAA Tournament bid.
