Vance BlantonCandidate for Student Body PresidentI don’t think that part-time students should be allowed to run for major elected positions. They do have elected positions made available to them (lifelong positions in senate), and I do think that they can be appointed to certain positions by elected officials. I don’t want somebody taking a one-hour PE class to be my Student Body President because I don’t think they represent the student body.
Will QuickCandidate for Student Body PresidentI think it’s unfortunate that the impression is that regardless of whether it passes it’s going to be nullified. If that’s the case, whoever is elected needs to sit down with Tom Stafford and other administrators if they do end up nullifying it if it passes or if it doesn’t pass. I think it’s a good thing that we’re trying to deal with this as students. I think we’re doing a good job at being proactive and putting it on the ballot.
Will Langley Candidate for Student Body PresidentI think every student should be able to vote. I really don’t think most students care one way or the other. If they want to vote, I think they should have a vote, even if they’re only taking a couple hours; even if they’re part-time students, I think they should have a voice. They have problems and issues of their own that they need somebody to look out for them for, and they need to be able to elect the person that they want to look out for them. I want every student who wants to vote to be able to vote.
Cody WilliamsCandidate for Student Body PresidentI’m in favor of it. I think that if it passes then it’ll definitely be a good thing, and it’ll be a good discussion next year. As Tom Stafford says, as far as part-time students go, that right away he didn’t want to accept it if it passes, it’ll show that part-time students vote. It’ll definitely help with any kind of decision that happens in the future. I think it’s good to clarify the constitution as it is and kind of tidy it up.
Zach AdamsCandidate for Student Senate PresidentI feel good about it. I feel mainly it’s just to clarify the way that we’ve interpreted things for about 20 years, and I think it’s good to allow the part-time students to participate in Student Government and in the elections.
James HankinsCandidate for Student Senate PresidentI am in support of the referendum, although I believe that in the near future fair changes can be made. The ultimate compromise is allowing part-time students to vote and run for low-level, non-paid positions but restricting them from high-level paid positions. The reason why the referendum needs to pass is to ensure these students have the right to both vote and run for office, so that is made clear, and then the compromise can come before fall elections next semester.
Matt WaltonCandidate for Student Senate PresidentI am in strong support of the referendum. I think that this updates and clarifies the Constitution while at the same time guaranteeing all students’ rights. I encourage all students to vote in support of the referendum because having it fail will make the Student Government and will make students very up in the air as far as the judicial branch and other areas of Student Government. I think that having it pass would really solve a lot of problems that have arisen over the past year.
