Stop proselytizingI find it extraordinarily inappropriate for members of the University community to endorse religious proselytizing in the student newspaper, as was done on page two of the April 10 edition. Shame on each and every one of you!

Langley the right man for the jobSomeone told me that I have been “deceived” if I believe that Will Langley is the best candidate but after reading Technician’s Election Guide today I believe that my friend was deceived. I’ve come to the conclusion that Will Langley, besides being the only person that has demonstrated any desire to have fun, is the only normal person running for student body president! Will Quick’s favorite class is biomedical ethics? And out of all the great things that have happened here at N.C. State, which one of them is his favorite memory: raising money for a charity. What a stereotypical suck-up answer. He doesn’t have a favorite music type and his platform is about as exciting as Herb Sendek’s personality (he was a good coach all the same.) Will Langley has tangible goals and likes to listen to Chairman of the Board. As far as I’m concerned he’s about as North Carolinian and normal as barbecue. And if you don’t like North Carolina or barbecue, you’ve got other issues.

Students need a student body president that is not afraid to stand up and fight for their rights as students. Students need a president that will serve as their advocate and promote positive change. Students need a leader that will make sure Student Government works for students. WillLangley is that leader. I have personally worked with Langley over the past three years and I can assure you that no other candidate comes close to possessing the passion and devotion Langley has for the students of NCSU. Langley wants to make our university better. As Student Body President, Langley will fight to insure a better NCSU. Vote for Langley.Vote for a better NCSU.

As an N.C. State alumnus, I have followed this year’s student body president election far closer than I ever did while I was in school. In many ways, it has been disappointing to watch the process deteriorate into a smear campaign that has left only Will Quick and Will Langley remaining on the ballot.I don’t know Will Quick. However, as Will Langley’s brother-in-law I have known him for 10 years and have never thought more highly of an individual his age. Throughout the many years I have known Will Langley, he has repeatedly surprised me with his commitment to civic duty. A few years back when running for the Wake County School Board at 18, he worked on changing the age requirements. I have never known Will Langley to accept the status quo or to shirk his duties. He has also impressed me with his achievements in the classroom and in his pursuit of opening a booze cruise after graduation. Now, I recognize many students may dream of opening a booze cruise, but Langley has attained his Master’s Captain’s License at age 20 and has repeatedly worked in the industry in Key West during his summer and winter breaks. I have found few people of any age with that kind of foresight and initiative in their long-term planning.Perhaps most importantly, Will Langley has always impressed me with his integrity and his character. I have watched him overcome significant obstacles set before him and ***noted the quality friendships he has developed — great people attract great people. I have watched him connect with people of diverse backgrounds, and I’ve witnessed him successfully partner with city officials and administrators. Furthermore, I believe in his desire to help his community. As I mentioned regarding Will Quick, I don’t know him, but I imagine that any Park Scholar has the ability to achieve. If I were voting in this year’s election, I would look at the dedication of the candidate and the effort they have put forth in this year’s election and expect the same effort in their term as student body president. Throughout this campaign, I have seen Will Langley’s overwhelming number of signs on and around campus, his endorsement by Technician and other organizations, the numerous articles citing his campaign ideas and his creative approaches to reach the student body. I have only seen a few signs for Will Quick and many articles where he has thrown stones against Will Langley’s character. Langley’s approach has been proactive, while Quick’s approach has been defensive. If you question my motives due to my family connections with Will Langley, I can honestly state I would not have written this letter for my own brother or sisters because they have not exhibited the same dedication and passion for service. Will Langley has my endorsement because he merits it, and he deserves your vote.

Quick: Why don’t you quit prancing around giving out hot dogs and instead tell us what makes you so much more holy than Will Langley? You’re not. You’ve stolen signs, you’ve lied, you give stereotypical beauty pageant answers and Will Langley is the ONLY honest person in this race.

I am voting for Will Langley tomorrow! He would be such an awesome president and he has the best ideas! I love the Bojangles’ student plan idea and the book rental idea! He is a genius! No one would be a better president!

Will Quick, in my last letter I stated you were probably capable of achieving as evident in your Park Scholarship. Today I learned that 300 of Will Langley’s signs are missing and several were found in your fraternity house. Now, I think you were born into a life of privilege with every advantage over most people and still find it necessary to lie, cheat and steal to win. I am ashamed you are Greek — I am ashamed you are an NCSU student — and if you were on fire, I wouldn’t piss on you to put it out.

Whatever you do, don’t vote LangleyI have never met Will Langley in my life. I never heard his name before this so-called election, and I’m not a Facebook friend or acquaintance. I’m confused as to why this mass e-mailing is still going on when he already was fined for it and received warning after warning. Correct me if I’m wrong, but no one wants a student body president that cheats, lies, bribes and has goofy hair. In his defense, no one should care what he does or what he stands for anyways. I say this because I know what he can and can’t do for the student body. Student’s, we’re on our own. We have no voice to the administration in Whil Piavis (the quite laughable Pirate Captain) and will continue to remain voiceless with either Will Langley or Will Quick. This is simply because they take no action, have no say and definitely do not have the good of the student body in mind. I mean, who the heck prefers a discount at Bojangles’ to honesty and a SBP with good character. Will Quick at least has good character and sincerity. In short, screw the elections, move on with your life and don’t spend one minute of time worrying about the results of such a petty, insignificant political farce.

After reading the front page of Monday’s Technician, we continued to be disappointed by Will Langley’s comments. In fact, we have been disgusted with the campaign as a whole and find many of Langley’s tactics dishonest and distasteful. We have received numerous e-mails from votelangley.com even though we have never met him and therefore can be considered neither a friend nor an acquaintance. These e-mails are just one example of Langley’s disregard of campaign policy. In Monday’s article when Langley cited the differences between the two candidates he remarked, “I don’t like it when people confuse us… I am normal student; he’s [Quick] a Park Scholar.” Langley’s efforts to attach a negative association to the Park Scholarship program are inappropriate and seemingly desperate. The Park Scholarship is offered on the basis of “four criteria: scholarship, character, demonstrated leadership and service, and the potential for further leadership and service.” Quick’s designation as a Park Scholar and the fact that he has not touted his achievements only reflects positively on his character and leadership abilities. We would also like to point out that Langley has a “passion to serve selfishly” as he so eloquently stated in candidate bio on page two of Monday’s Technician. We sincerely hope that the student body will recognize the error in Langley’s accusations and campaign behavior.

In Monday’s paper, Langley was quoted as saying, “I enjoy thinking innovatively and out of the box.” I don’t know either of the candidates for student body president, but, if Will Langley does enjoy “thinking out of the box,” it doesn’t appear that he is any good at it. Look at his platform, it consists of “Get a Bojangles’ Special — Elon did it,” “Do this — App did it”, and “Do that — UNC does it.” So, I’d just like to ask Langley why if you enjoy being original and creative are you so into copying everyone else?
Robert MorrisonJuniorAerospace Engineering
Many of you may have seen the signs around campus for Will Langley. “Bojangles’ special — Appalachian did it.” “Book rental program — Elon did it.” First of all, this shows that our candidate cares about what other schools are doing. He’s keeping his ears open for new ideas. That’s a good thing. But, can he back them up? What makes me want to believe he’ll follow through on these promises?Just for fun, let’s adapt Langley’s signs to what we know he can do. “Having members of his campaign send out e-mails soliciting votes — Langley did it.” “Door-to-door solicitations in Tucker Hall without permission — Langley did it.” And I should have better sense than to quote someone through someone else, but this just jumped out at me and I could care less if it’s directly quoted or not. “Need Permission? — Langley doesn’t.” Even when asked by one of his prospective constituents if he had permission to go door-to-door, Langley said he doesn’t “go by those rules.” Who wants a president who can’t even follow the rules laid out for campaigning? Langley even said himself that a candidate’s campaign is a sign of what his presidency will be like. That being said, I would like to ask Langley: What kind of president is your campaign saying you’ll be?

Hail to the Chief as we pledge conciliation! These aren’t quite the lyrics to Sanderson’s presidential melody, but right now N.C. State wouldn’t know. What the campus is realizing is that this declaration has become this election’s motto — yet as it stands we aren’t fighting against it. Our problem is that we can all see its meaning; but we stand aside, all of us choosing to direct our Wills elsewhere! The result: a battle of “Sheer Will,” as this newspaper puts it, which has devastated our self-control. Gone is our proclaimed autonomy from our campus representatives.Yesterday, as I left D.H. Hill Library, it hit me. I heard and saw the confirmation that our election has been stripped from us for the color of our own amusement and manipulation. One surely would think the circus has come to town — Barnum & Langley’s Greatest Show on Earth. Well, and so it has. As I looked around at the banners, the three-ring performers (on scooters of course), and the tents, I knew that we students are now just hitching a ride. And so what? It’s college, after all. The fun times are half the…well, fun. But always remember this: you hold the key to it all, NCSU students. You are the arbiters — Langley and Quick are only here because of you. Don’t ever give it up, whether by voting this week or just staying informed. Make sure you can honestly “Hail to the Chief! / In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call…”
Jeff OlanderSophomoreMathematics
Make voting worth our timeIt would be nice if each student received a $3 gift certificate to the bookstore for voting. That would dramatically increase voter turnout to almost the entire campus! Voters need to be enticed to vote. But I voted anyway today and I hope that the next student body president will handle matters much better than current one! I don’t think Langley will be able to do that with his sneaky tactics of his campaign.
