Fowler, Oblinger take trip to Memphis
According to WRAL, Athletics Director Lee Fowler and Chancellor James Oblinger were among a small group of University representatives who flew to Memphis on Sunday to meet with Tigers coach John Calipari. Fowler had no comment on the trip.
Hancock Qualifies for NCAAs
Sophomore Leigha Hancock qualified for the NCAA Championships on Saturday night at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Hancock finished tied for first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.9, becoming the first gymnast at N.C. State to ever win an event at the NCAA Regionals and the first since 1999 to qualify for the NCAAs.
Gymnastics Finish Tied for Fifth at NCAA Regionals
The gymnastics team finished tied for fifth at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Athens, Ga., Saturday night. N.C. State finished the meet with the score of 193.925, tying West Virginia while Georgia won the overall meet scoring a 197.425. Junior Rachel Katz finished tied for eighth in vault and freshman Elyse Adams finished tied for 13th. Senior Kylah Bachman, performing in her final meet, led the Wolfpack with a score of 38.350 in the all-around, and finished tied for 14th.Sophomore Leigha Hancock won in vault with a score of 9.9 and tied for 12th in beam.Hancock qualified for the NCAA Championships, becoming the first gymnast at State to ever win an event at the NCAA Regionals and the first since 1999 to qualify for the NCAAs.
Pack set record
The men’s tennis team set a new school record for wins in a season with 20 by overcoming No. 18 Clemson 4-3 on Sunday at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium. No. 36 N.C. State also reached its highest ACC win total since 1999 with three conference triumphs.The Wolfpack (20-7, 3-6 ACC) previously won 19 matches in 1978 and 1979. 1978 also marked the last time the Pack had defeated the Tigers.Seniors Will Shaw and Val Banada, junior William Noblitt and freshman Chris Welte each won their singles matches, but Clemson swept three doubles matches.
Clark finishes 2nd in Masters
Former N.C. State star Tim Clark finished second in the Masters yesterday at Augusta National.The native of South Africa shot minus-3 yesterday to finish minus-5 on the tournament.
Hodge shot, in good condition
Former N.C. State guard Julius Hodge was shot in the legs while driving his car in north Denver early Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press. Hodge was the Denver Nuggets’ first-round pick in last year’s draft, and the team expects him to make a full recovery within a month.
Devine struggles again
After giving up three earned runs, two hits, one walk and a homerun in one-third of an inning on Friday against San Francisco, former N.C. State pitcher and current Atlanta pitcher Joey Devine had another tough outing against the Giants on Saturday. The Braves pitcher allowed four earned runs, three hits and four walks in two-thirds of an inning. His ERA on the season is now 63.00.Devine left the Wolfpack after his junior year and was a first-round selection by the Braves last year. He was called up to the Braves on April 6 after posting a 2.25 ERA, 20 strikeouts, a win and a save for Richmond.
