For Adam Compton, serving as treasurer is about more than just money.
It’s about education.
One of two candidates for student body treasurer, Compton said he hopes to implement a financial education campaign, where he intends to offer information sessions to students about tuition and fees, financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
“I’m running this year to try and change some things with how the treasury department works,” he said. “It seems like it’s a service of the Student Government and not really a service of the University like it’s supposed to be.”
Compton believes the first issue for improvement should be appropriations and making sure it’s Student Government’s first priority. He said his experience in Student Government qualifies him for the position because it allowed him to see how the process works.
“I’ve seen how projects can be done the best way for students on campus and the best way to make sure their money is spent properly,” he said.
He also plans to make the treasury department directed more towards students through group visitations, in which the department talks with groups on campus about appropriations and a virtual help desk where students can get information about permits and funding.
“[A virtual help desk] would be a way for student groups to find out more information,” he said. “If somebody was to sit down and talk with people beforehand, I think a lot more questions would be answered.”
Compton also said he wants Student Government to work more with the tuition and fees committee.
Compton has served one year on Student Senate, acting as vice chair of the Public Affairs Committee, vice chair of the Appropriations Committee and chair of the Tuition and Fees Committee.
He also helped organize several campaigns, including “Chained by Tuition,” Tailgating for Tailgating and the Letter Writing Campaign for a Tuition Guarantee.
Compton is a sophomore in construction engineering and management.
