The sound of breaking glass and grinding metal echoes through the area on the Tri-Tower side of the Free Expression Tunnel. On most nights this would be cause for alarm, but tonight it is just the sound of students preparing for Saturday’s football game by destroying a car covered in light blue spray paint. The Senior Class Council hosted the second annual Ram Roast Thursday night at the Free Expression Tunnel. The event aimed to prevent students from UNC-Chapel Hill from painting the tunnel light blue. “It’s my senior year and my last chance I’ll have to partake in these events,” Cyrus Proctor, senior in nuclear engineering, said. “All my good buddies are out here and it’s a great way to get into the spirit for Saturday’s game.” This years Ram Roast featured free barbecue, car bashing, ram pinatas, a scavenger hunt, Xbox games and continuous music. “I loved bashing the car. It’s a good way to get out your end-of-semester aggression,” Michael Laughlin, a freshman in agricultural education, said. Last year’s senior class president, Carla Babb, started the Ram Roast as a way to raise school spirit before the football game between the Tar Heels and the Wolfpack. “I was really sick of seeing the tunnel painted blue, so I decided my senior year that we weren’t going to have the tunnel blue anymore,” Babb said. “We had a huge turnout the first time we held it.” According to Senior Class President Adam Whitehouse, 50 to 100 people were expected to come out to defend the tunnel. The Ram Roast lasted from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. “I came down here to eat some delicious barbecue, which my brother cooked, and to have a good time,” Virgina Ball, a freshman in psychology, said. “I also wanted to spite the Tar Heels.”
