Our Opinion: The Board of Trustees should allot the necessary funds to revitalize Greek Court.
Home is where the heart is.
But for hundreds of Greek Life members, home is outdated and insufficient.
The Greek Court Redevelopment Task Force is asking the Board of Trustees to approve a plan to renew Greek Court.
Greek Life is epitomized with extravagant social gatherings at big, clean, new houses.
In contrast, at N.C. State, members of fraternities and sororities with housing on Greek Court live in cramped bedrooms with old flooring and unfashionable exteriors in an area that isn’t conducive to a community feel.
Of course, every aspect of Greek life isn’t going to be perfect.
But fraternity and sorority houses serve as a place for members to call home, as well as a location for networking with alumni and other chapters. It reflects poorly upon our University if the conditions of chapter housing elsewhere exceed that of NCSU.
Fraternities at NCSU are struggling with recruitment. A plan like this can reinvigorate the community.
There are 42 Greek organizations on campus, according to Greek Life. Every organization doesn’t have housing on Greek Court, but the area still represents the Greek community on campus as a whole. If it is dilapidated and out-dated, that doesn’t send out a very positive message about the importance of Greek Life.
The Board of Trustees needs to allot the money requested by the Greek Court Revitalization Task Force because it is not only giving members of fraternities and sororities nicer bedrooms or gathering spots; it is strengthening the image of the University by giving Greek alumni a nicer place to gather during reunions, as well as showing an investment in the future of Greek Life.
If the revitalization takes place, the current members of fraternities and sororities are going to have a more positive opinion of the University and its spending habits.
By spending money on Greek Court now, the Board of Trustees can improve the future of Greek Life.
Greek Life isn’t for everyone, but more students will consider joining a fraternity or sorority if Greek Life publicly has the financial support of the University and something attractive to offer its pledges.
