Firefighters have managed to extinguish a large fire that broke out early this morning at Ivy Chase Apartments off Trailwood Drive.
A firefighter on the scene said no one was hurt in the blaze.
Damage to building 3621 forced many residents of the mostly student-occupied complex from their homes.
Barry Hodowanic, a junior in nuclear engineering and resident of the building, said he didn’t even hear the fire alarm.
“I was asleep and I heard people yelling ‘Fire!’ he said. “I put shorts on, woke up my roommates and went outside and saw the fire.”
According to Angie Lovelace with Ivy Chase Apartments, the Red Cross is working with the residents.
Although Hodowanic said he and his roommate were in the process of moving into another apartment in the complex at around 7:30 a.m., he said the Red Cross gave him $150 and a hotel to stay in over the weekend.
Caroline Smith, a student at Meredith and another resident of an apartment just below the location of the upper-floor blaze, said she would also be moving into another apartment on the property.
“It was crazy, I can’t believe it,” Smith said. “Just last night I was sitting on my porch.”
