College Democrats and College Republicans united once again for a candlelight vigil in the Court of North Carolina Monday night.
Approximately 100 students lit candles, observed a moment of silence and sang the national anthem.
“My dad’s a fire chief,” Melissa Stallings, a senior in criminology, said. “[Sept. 11] hit me especially hard. I just thought it was a great idea to do this. We needed it.”
Partipants gathered in a circle and listened to Drew Ball, a senior in political science and president of the College Democrats, read a speech from Franklin D. Roosevelt. Alexander Santago, a sophomore in civil engineering, played “Taps” on the trumpet “to honor our country and play our emotion in songs.”
“Music is a reminder of why we do everything that we do,” Santago said.
Jeff Martyn, a senior in environmental technology, said this was a historical event worth remembering.
“I’m not big about celebrating on holidays,” he said, “but this is one tragedy that you shouldn’t forget.”
Rena Eubanks, a freshman in physics and chemistry, agreed.
“I was in class when Sept. 11 happened. I watched all the people die and I’m just out here in remembrance,” she said.
