It started with a snap of his fingers and a quick breath, followed by the tapping of his foot.
“I’m so inspired by you; that hasn’t happened in the longest time,” he sang out.
Landon Brock, a freshman in biological sciences, auditioned for Pack It Up, the University’s only marching band and a cappella ensemble, on Thursday.
“They seemed to think it was pretty good,” he said of his audition. “It went all right. As good as I wanted it to.”
The a cappella group held auditions in Talley Student Center for interested students. Five freshmen auditioned.
Noelle Moursy, a freshman in animal science who plays trumpet in the marching band, auditioned for the group.
“I like to sing, and it’d be something to get involved in. I just tried not to look at anybody,” she said about her audition.
Moursy said his singing experience consisted of “nothing other than just singing wherever.”
Ryan McCrory, a freshman in construction engineering, said he didn’t know about the auditions until Thursday.
“We talked to the lady down at the ticket center [in Talley] about Chapter 6,” he said, referring to another a cappella group on campus. He said he was nervous about his audition.
“I’m freaking out,” he said. “I’m scared. Not that I should be, but I am.”
Each student who auditioned was required to sing scales, notes with current members of the group and a song of his or her choice. Eight current members of the group judged the auditions.
Pack It Up formed when “a couple of marching band geeks from North Carolina State University got together and decided to start an a cappella group,” according to the ensemble’s Web site.
The ensemble is preparing for the Unity concert on Sept. 21, in which all the a cappella groups on campus are performing together.
