Frank Ormond, an associate professor for the physical education department, passed away Monday, June 12 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. Ormond was 55.
Memorial services for Ormond will be held today at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Christian Church in Reidsville, N.C.
“He affected the life of literally thousands and thousands of students who had him for class and probably our whole faculty,” March Krotee, physical education department chair, said.
Krotee said Ormond taught thousands of students over the 23 years he taught, teaching everything from golf, which he said was one of his passions, to run conditioning.
“He had run the Boston Marathon; he had a lot of good experience to share with students and students were always his first concern,” Krotee said. “It will be a big loss to the department, to the students and certainly to N.C. State.”
Randall Bechtolt, physical education lecturer, said Ormond was well-respected among peers.
“He always took great pride in being really knowledgeable on the University, on what was happening with the University,” he said. “He would always take care of details; he was very organized. If you came into a meeting that he was running, you knew he would have everything laid out for you.”
Sgt. Jon Barnwell of the Campus Police said Monday afternoon that there was a cardiac arrest in Carmichael gym around 7:15 a.m. Barnwell said witnesses saw him working out beforehand.
The first people to respond were members of the Carmichael Gymnasium staff, Barnwell said, including students who were trained as first responders.
“By the time our fire protection personnel got there, they were already performing CPR,” he said. “Fire protection took over and then EMS responded and took over from there.”
