1. HELIOS
Located downtown on Glenwood Avenue, Helios is nestled into a row of restaurants, art galleries and night clubs. During the day you can relax on the patio under the orange umbrellas and enjoy a signature bistro sandwich and a double latte. At night, you can enjoy a cool Coke float or a glass of wine or beer along with live music. For new customers, the first drip coffee is on the house. And on Tuesday nights, you can get half off bottles of wine.

With dim lights and jazz music playing in the background, this coffee shop is a convenient place to relax after class or gather with other students and study. Global Village offers a range of organic coffee as well as pastries and desserts.
“I come here to get out of the office mode,” Dave Baker, a graduate student in physics, said. “It is a relaxed place where I can get some work done.”

3. COFFEE HAVEN
Decorated with old black and white photos and white wicker chairs, the rustic coffee shop looks like it was pulled right out of the country. Coffee Haven offers free wireless Internet to its customers and provides games such as dominoes and checkers. Toward the back of the coffee shop, there are a couple of white wicker chairs and a single booth for those looking for a more private setting.

4. PORT CITY JAVA
Conveniently located in the first floor of the textiles building on Centennial Campus, Port City Java serves USDA organic coffee and coffee drinks. Fruit lovers can enjoy one of its smoothies. And Port City Java makes its espresso drinks with one more shot of espresso than most other coffee shops.
“A lot of students from textiles come over here during their break time,” Siddharth Malkani, Port City Java employee and graduate student in electrical engineering, said.

5. CUP A JOE – MISSION VALLEY
Cup A Joe, equipped with its own sandwich bar, can energize any starving student with just a mocha and a panini. Customers get 20 percent off of any beverage with the purchase of any sandwich, wrap, salad or pocket.

6. REVERIE
This coffee den is located directly across from D.H. Hill Library on Hillsborough Street. According to James DiStefano, Reverie’s owner, the Peanut Butter Pie Latte is a favorite among customers. And for every 10 coffees that you buy, the 11th is on the house.

With walls laced with posters of Frank Zappa, this coffee shop is a break from the monotony of everyday life. Benches line the wall for customers to sit in while sipping on soy mochas. Cup A Joe provides smoking and nonsmoking sections.
“I hated coffee when I started working here, but now I really like it,” said Kate Thompson, a junior in psychology and employee of Cup A Joe.

10. ROYAL BEAN
Located across from Meredith College, Royal Bean is a spacious coffee shop that caters to many students. Royal Bean invites its customers to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch Grey’s Anatomy on Thursdays on its large, flat-screen TV. Local artists can display their art in the coffee shop for sale or decoration. This shop also offers dozens of games for you to play, including Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and puzzles, and it features live music from time to time. But smokers beware, this coffee house doesn’t allow smoking.
