Today, in the wee hours of the morning, the polls opened for this year’s student body election. If you are like me, you haven’t had time to login and cast your vote. In that case, here is who I support and why.
Student Body President
Of the five candidates running it comes down to Adam Compton and Kate Luckadoo. Both are great people, Adam with strong leadership abilities and Kate with wonderful people skills.
However, when it comes to being the most effective voice and getting things done for the student body, Compton has proven that he is more able than Kate and the other three candidates. Over the past year, the appropriations process was the most efficient and expedited in recent years, and much of the credit goes to Compton, student body treasurer.
If elected as student body president, Compton has a plan to energize the campus and help students get the most out of their college experience. One of his greatest ideas is having a Wolf Prowl Bus that will transport students round-trip from residence halls and apartments to Hillsborough Street and downtown nightlife. This will allow students to get out into Raleigh and not have to worry about paying for a cab.
Student Senate President
With the administration denying James Hankins the right to run, I’ve had to rethink who I believe will best serve students bearing this title. To be honest, of the three candidates on the ballot, there are only two that I will consider voting for: Sara Yasin and T. Greg Doucette.
This race will truly come down to a coin flip for me. Both of these individuals have the highest standards when it comes to the legislative body. Neither has been wrapped up in a scandal that has harmed students.
This year, Yasin served as the first-ever student centers president, while Doucette served as a senator and was chair of the appropriations committee. Both filed late, but nonetheless, they have the passion to serve this office well. So, now I must pull out my quarter and flip, heads Sara, tails Greg. Either way, you’ll get your money’s worth with these two.
Student Chief Justice
“Fighting for justice” is the motto that Student Chief Justice Lock Whiteside ran on last year and has continued to do during his first term in office. We need to re-elect Whiteside as our chief justice so that he can take this fight to the next level, the board of trustees.
Whiteside has an independence from the administration that will aid him in being an advocate for students in the realm of student conduct.
Furthermore, Whiteside wants to work on the serious problem of driving while impaired. He plans to continue to hold drunken driving events in the Brickyard. This issue is one that can take a person’s life, and Whiteside wants to do everything he can to prevent an unnecessary death because a student decides to drive while impaired.
Student Body Treasurer
Up until a phone conversation on Saturday night, I had little interest in this race. Previously, I was indifferent toward both candidates; however, when David Foxx returned my phone call, it changed my thinking.
When I spoke with Foxx, I heard something that I hadn’t heard in this race — passion. Foxx talked about how he will turn his access as a candidate into access as student body treasurer. Speaking with over 20 groups during his campaign, Foxx did something that he will need to be able to do when in office, which is meet with student organizations, especially when it comes to applying for appropriations.
Now it’s time for you to make your voice heard and login to vote.ncsu.edu. Polls close at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
