The Golden Brick Award — it shines with pride or reflects great disappointment, its perception based on the reason for garnering such an annual award. Categories that accompany prestige include student leader and athlete of the year, best artistic performance and more; conversely, those categories that are less than flattering include most under achieving University department.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to distribute the inaugural Golden Brick Awards:
Best Artistic PerformanceI could not possibly bestow this award to only one person, so instead I award it to The Packabelles a cappella group. I had the pleasure of witnessing two performances by this group, and each one was marvelous. The Packabelles have exceptional voices and a repertoire of songs that anyone can enjoy. Every time I hear them perform, I could sit and listen for hours. They are a must-see act.
Outstanding Student Government OfficialOne would assume this award would go to a student body officer, but not this year. Kelli Rogers, a freshman senator, has demonstrated her desire to serve the student body countless times over the course of the year. She has proven herself by actively advocating for students and helping to organize projects to benefit students. Good work, Kelli.
Athlete of the YearI must agree with my colleagues over in the sports section; track and field team member Mitchell Pope is by far the athlete of the year. His performance in the thrower’s circle has elevated him to national recognition. When he steps into the circle, his opponents know that he means business and is a force to be reckoned with. Mitchell should add this award to his mantel alongside the many awards garnered during his career. Well done, Mitchell.
Most Underachieving University DepartmentThe Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service, or CSLEPS, undoubtedly deserves this award. CSLEPS can and should do more to engage students and promote their mission of providing unique learning experiences that realize the goals of their center. Students must demand more from this unit, and maybe next year they will not find themselves receiving this award.
Administrator of the YearYou are probably not aware of this individual, but that doesn’t mean that he is not in touch with students and their needs. He is very receptive to students in discussing their concerns and goals. He is influential in dealing with the academic programs of undergrads and promoting student development. I have enjoyed speaking with him, as he is truly interested in student lives. He is Dean Thomas Conway of the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs. Thank you, Dean Conway.
Student Leader of the YearThis highly coveted Gold Brick goes to John Mickey, a sophomore in business management and one of the most genuine individuals you will meet at N.C. State. John has held the titles of student senator, member of the Student Centers Board of Directors, and Lee Hall resident advisor, but it is not his titles that have earned him this award, it is his actions. John has worked with administrators and fellow students to accomplish tangible things that will actually benefit students. Allowing the use of debit cards on campus is just one of many issues to which John has devoted considerable time to making a reality.
The Final Word:Deciding who should receive a Golden Brick Award was not easy. Taking a look back at this past year, there were many deserving people and groups that could have walked away with a Golden Brick. As you look to next year, I challenge you to be more innovative and passionate about our campus. By doing this you will better N.C. State and yourself. Don’t be afraid to step up and be a leader on this campus and promote new ideas. Finally, by doing this maybe you or your group will garner a Golden Brick Award.
