1. Moe’s Southwest Grill
Welcome to Moe’s! This burrito chain is way more than a fast place to grab a burrito.
“Not only is it really, really good, but they say “Welcome to Moe’s’ every time you enter,” Daniel Knight, a sophomore in history, said.
Offering a unique atmosphere and exciting menu items like the “Joey Bag of Donuts,” the “Homewrecker” and the vegetarian “Art Vandalay,” students cannot resist Moe’s.
“I like Moe’s because they have vegetarian options and lots of toppings like guacamole” Lyndsey Smith, a junior in communication, said.
Each burrito comes with a pile of tortilla chips that you can dip in one of the many salsas on the salsa bar or in the infamous queso dip. And you can opt to get your burrito naked, which means without the tortilla. Moe’s makes the “big and filling” burrito right in front of you, and according to Avis Mukungurutse, a sophomore in elementary education, “that’s the best part!”
Location: Cameron Village, Crabtree Valley Mall food court, North Hills
2. Baja Burrito
Coming in at a very close second is Baja Burrito, the perfect place to hang out with your buddies and enjoy a burrito stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, pico, guacamole and chicken or steak.
“Baja burrito has the best burrito in the area … you get a giant burrito for around $6, and it comes with tortilla chips … that’s all I ever get!” Joe Kimray, a senior in English, said.
And to satisfy your spicy side, these burritos can also come with hot sauce.
“I think Baja has the best flavor É it’s the spiciest, and I love spicy food,” Lindsay Barfield, a senior in English, said.
But beware, if you want sour cream, guacamole or salsa for your chips, be prepared to pay a little extra. This joint does not offer a salsa bar.
Location: Mission Valley, Avent Ferry Road
3. Qdoba Mexican Grill
Qdoba’s style is slightly different. It features “signature burritos” that include the slightly spicy mole sauce, ranchera sauce and the Poblano Pesto Burrito with chicken, pesto sauce, roasted poblano peppers, cilantro, almonds and pine nuts. Also, if you love vegetables, then you’re in luck because it has a grilled vegetable burrito with red peppers, yellow squash and zucchini. You can, of course, get the lovable chicken or steak burrito instead, if you are not in the mood to try a new flavor.
“I like Qdoba the best because they steam their tortillas and their queso dip is so good,” Candice Gilliland, a sophomore in political science, said.
For a fast food meal that’s not so fattening, try Qdoba.
“It’s healthier and less greasy. I would go on a cheap date to Qdoba, but not Taco Bell,” Aaron Hughes, a senior in biological engineering, said.
Location: Six Forks Road 4. Chipotle
Chipotle gives you your food with no special menu names or graphics.
“The menu is simple and straightforward. Everything on their menu is delicious, especially their burritos,” Tyler Miller, a junior in marine sciences, said.
This restaurant offers a laid-back, simple atmosphere with no funky flavors, just tasty grilled meats and spices.
Location: Glenwood Avenue
5. Salsa Fresh
Salsa Fresh looks like your typical takeout burrito place with a few cute tables and a TV.
“I really enjoy getting takeout food from Salsa Fresh because everything I’ve ordered there is scrumpdiddlyupmtious,” Thomas Sinodis, a senior in chemical engineering, said.
If you love guacamole, it is made from scratch and the tortilla chips are served unsalted for healthier, fresher eating.
Location: Duraleigh Road
6. El Rodeo
This Hillsborough Street eatery features classic Mexican cuisine and offers an laid-back atmosphere. It is a sit-down restaurant but offers fast service for student on the go.
“For how nice it is, it’s really fast and you [get] unlimited free chips and salsa with your meal. É It’s ebullient!” John Chiulli, a junior in mechanical engineering, said.
El Rodeo’s burritos, on its lunch and dinner menus, can come with refried beans, rice or fajita style.
Location: Hillsborough Street 7. Salsaritas
Everyone knows that margaritas go great with burritos, and Salsaritas makes a wonderful one at its brightly colored bar.
“Salsaritas is more laid back than Moe’s — it’s pretty much amazing” Matt Lunn, a senior in natural resources, said.
The fun atmosphere and brightly painted walls make Salsaritas a great place to enjoy your burrito. Choose meats such as grilled steak, chicken, BBQ pork or savory, shredded beef to satisfy your hunger. You will have to travel farther away from campus to enjoy one of these burritos, but it will be worth the drive.
Location: Brier Creek Parkway
8. Armadillo Grill
This burrito joint offers a do-it-yourself menu where you circle exactly what you want stuffed in your tortilla shell.
“I like the unique ordering style, and [the Armadillo Grill] has a great atmosphere,” Will Adcock, a junior in civil engineering, said.
The grill also offers plenty of outdoor seating and prices low enough to make students happy.
Location: Glenwood Avenue
9. Dos Taquitos
For authentic Mexican cuisine, Dos Taquitos is where you want to be. The atmosphere is similar to El Rodeo, but this restaurant is a little farther away. Dos Taquitos strives for uniqueness and authenticity by providing the customer with an environment similar to a Mexican tienda.
Location: Creedmoor Road
10. Taco Bell
Sliding into No. 10 is Taco Bell. Perfect for the broke college student or the hungry on-campus student, Taco Bell is, at least, convenient.
“[It’s] the best value for the money, but the meat quality is not as good as Moe’s. Plus, your burrito cannot be customized,” David Bradley, a junior in construction engineering, said. For “Mexican” food on campus, Taco Bell is, well, your only choice.
