Despite the dismal crowd Monday night and a season of adversity, coach Kay Yow made history by winning her 700th career game as a Division I coach, some of those coming early in her career at Elon University.
Yow started her tenure here in 1975, and since then her face has become synonymous with Wolfpack athletics.
She is a true legend, much like Pat Summitt at Tennessee, Mike Krzyzewski at Duke and Geno Auriemma at Connecticut.
This has been a magical season for the Pack, which has faced many trials and tribulations and still managed to be a force in the ACC.
It is evident the spirit and strength of Yow has rubbed off on her players – if only all of us had a chance to work with her day in and day out.
She is truly the premier representative of our University, and we should all be proud.
One of the first things Yow did after the monumental victory Monday night was redirect all of the credit for her accomplishments to others.
“The 700th win – I accept that on behalf of all the former staffs, current staffs, former players and current team,” she said. “Of course that could have never happened without all those people. I just happened to be the one person that’s been around for that long, if you can imagine.”
It takes a certain person to be able to persevere for so long in such a stressful position – to keep pushing harder and harder, regardless of personal or uncontrollable barriers.
Coach Yow: you did this. This is your achievement and you deserve full credit.
It is amazing she has reached this milestone while battling cancer, but this feat goes beyond that.
Seven hundred wins isn’t a gauge of longevity – it is an elite status that few have the strength, courage and talent to achieve.
Yow brings credibility and excitement to a sport forgotten on countless campuses across the nation.
But when it’s all said and done, the sport, the sex of those who play it and the revenue it generates serve no level of importance.
What really matters is that our University, one with so many accomplishments both on and off the court, is home to a legend.
