The women’s basketball team won its third straight ACC game Thursday night, this time against Wake Forest 79-53 at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum.
Coach Kay Yow, who is in her 32nd year at N.C. State, moved one more win closer to No. 700 as her team posted its second win of the season against Wake Forest.
The Wolfpack took an early 9-0 lead after four baskets and held the Demon Deacons scoreless for almost the first five minutes of the game. The lead would expand to more than 20 points by halftime.
State, who is 10th in the conference in points per game with only 64.5, led Wake Forest 49-26 at halftime. The Pack shot 54.8 percent from the field on 17-of-31 shooting.
In the second half, State didn’t let up. The team held its lead throughout the half and continued its streak of holding onto leads in the second half. The Pack is now 13-0 on the season when leading at the break.
Senior guard Ashley Key led the team with 20 points. Junior forward Khadijah Whittington, who leads the conference in rebounds, pulled down 14 boards for the game.
Freshman guard Amber White had a career-high 14 points and also had eight rebounds. She went 2-of-4 from the three-point line and only had two turnovers in 23 minutes.
Yow played 13 players in the game — eight in the first half. Only three did not score.
The win moved State into a tie for fourth place in the conference — a position Yow and assistant coach Stephanie Glance said earlier in the season that they were aiming for by the end of conference play. The team received help when Georgia Tech upset Maryland, last year’s national champion, Thursday night 77-72. All three now sit at 5-3 in the conference.
Florida State holds the third-place position at 5-1 while Duke and North Carolina both remain at the top with undefeated records.
