In my installation address, I talked about N.C. State’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. As Chancellor of “the people’s University,” I want all students, faculty and staff to know that N.C. State is a university that values and embraces diversity — of people and of ideas.
Our varied experiences, cultures, backgrounds and beliefs add intellectual richness to our campus community. I recognize the value of diversity, inclusiveness and mutual respect among our N.C. State community as imperative to furthering our mission to serve the people of North Carolina.
Under law — and out of a moral commitment to non-discrimination — we have long-established polices against harassment and other forms of discrimination, such as the “Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination Policy Statement” and the “Unlawful Harassment Policy Statement.” These existing policies cover racially hostile acts like hanging a noose in the workplace. The Unlawful Harassment Policy Statement provides that harassment based on race, color, religion, creed, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status or sexual orientation is a form of discrimination and will not be tolerated.
In addition, the University recently enacted a regulation requiring that every employee at N.C. State must participate in a training program related to preventing and responding to discrimination and harassment.
These policies are backed by grievance procedures for students and employees who have been victims of discrimination and disciplinary procedures for employees or students who commit violations. In other words, N.C. State prohibits unlawful discrimination and has the tools to punish it.
I am reaffirming and want us all to reaffirm N.C. State’s commitment to serving a diverse community that recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of each person. I will not tolerate any form of unlawful harassment, discrimination, violence or intimidation.
By choosing not to tolerate hateful acts on our campus, we choose today and every day to reaffirm our commitment to building a diverse, respectful and open community. I encourage each of you to continue the conversation about how we can enhance diversity and inclusiveness on our campus — whether that be through open discussion or diversity dialogues. I challenge all faculty, staff and students to join me in maintaining N.C. State’s welcoming and safe environment.
