Before receiving my admissions letter from N.C. State, I researched the various student organizations on campus. Not a student yet, I wanted to investigate the various outlets I could get involved in. All through my life, I’ve balanced schoolwork with extracurricular activities. It seems to me that the most successful college students are those who manage their time the best. Of course, there are those students who fly under the radar. Most of the time, those who have the least free time use it more efficiently. Last year as a freshman, I gave considerable thought to how I wanted to define myself. I joined a student organization and found my calling in radio. I never dreamed I would be a broadcaster. The listening audience at any given time blows my mind — WKNC reaches Wake and parts of Orange County. I’ve always loved music, but have finally found my place in the studio at an hour when most people aren’t even up. Music might not be everyone’s passion, but there’s an organization out there for everyone to find their place. If there isn’t that club for you, find a few friends who support your vision and create your own group. College is a time when we connect with others of similar interests. Freshmen: You have now been at NCSU for half a semester. Are you still going about your daily routine, skipping a class here or there and eating Chick-fil-A for lunch and Taco Bell for dinner?
Are you doing anything to be well-rounded? When you graduate, employers are going to review more than your GPA on your resume. Ideally, they will see you invested some of your time into extracurricular activities, which make you a more competitive candidate. Don’t let four years slip away without finding your niche in our college community. Your possibilities at NCSU are endless. If you’re an idealist wanting to change the University and like arguing, join Student Government. With your help, maybe something newsworthy will finally get done. Or perhaps you are a fun person who likes to see others have a good time — the Union Activities Board (UAB) sounds like the place for you. They put on many great events throughout the year that get students excited about their time here. There is always something to look forward to with UAB.
Maybe you are looking for your home away from home with a group of people that become family. Find your brothers or sisters by joining a fraternity or sorority. With their bountiful social opportunities, you will never be alone and will always have someone to hang out with. They have a strong sense of community, they do service activities and create traditions that they pass along year to year.
The last group I wish to highlight would be that within your residence: your hall council. It’s the easiest way to get involved, be a leader and make decisions that affect your dorm. You become a student leader and organize programs that are fun and informative for the dorm. Also, it’s great to add to your resume.
Finding your place on campus shouldn’t be a difficult task. By being involved you can have a more rewarding college experience.
