Happy Halloween!
This is what I would probably be saying if we had today or, preferably, tomorrow off from school. But, since we don’t have that luxury I’ll offer you a more reasonable Happy miserable-day-when-you-are-just-doing-the-bare-minimum-due-to-the-intense-anticipation-of-this-evening-probably tomorrow morning.
Halloween, for those who are new to America or Earth, is that special day where everyone gets drunk on a school night and most college girls dress up like frilly prostitutes and then try to convince drunk men on the street they are actually nurses or something else.
You may now be expecting me to throw out the typical campus-newspaper-type complaints about how trampy and disgusting these lewd displays are and then to vehemently call for a return to modesty. If so, I’m sorry to disappoint. Actually, I’m no way opposed to women choosing to dress in a manner that would horrify all their nearest relations for two main reasons.
First, I think the entire point of feminism is that women should be able to choose how and who they want to be regardless of unnecessary social norms (including those imposed by other women who consider themselves morally superior). I have never felt the fact a women has the right to be taken seriously means another woman can’t choose to not take anything seriously. Feminist women should support each other in their choices whether or not they agree with each other.
Secondly, let’s keep in mind that we are in college here, people. This is the best, and presumably only, time for us to go out and party dressed like a saucy wench.
It’s a depressing thought but, really, what is wrong with some people that they are so entirely serious they can’t see the fun in going a little crazy now and again –of course, with all possible safety precautions taken?
If you are a naturally modest woman, great, but that still doesn’t give you the right to complain about what others wear. If you don’t like it, then by all means, please don’t look. And if you want to have the classiest costume on the block, go for it. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to overexpose. The problem is people who feel somehow there is something wrong with a woman choosing to dress in (let’s not sugar coat) a slutty costume.
People who are so horribly uncomfortable with their own bodies that they actually think it’s wrong for a woman to have a suggestive Halloween costume should probably seek professional help before they develop some sort or disorder.
I suppose if you are absolutely stern in your resolve to make a big deal about a bunch of college kids having fun then I can’t stop you. But I do humbly request you keep your comments and sneers to yourself, and please try not to ruin everyone else’s good time by vocalizing your completely unnecessary and unwarranted opinions.
If there was ever a time and a place to let loose and get a little crazy, Halloween night when you’re in college is it, and I encourage everyone to have an amazing time and to tell the femi-Nazi’s to leave their pretentious attitudes at home. Stay safe, everyone!
