Talley Student Center was closed to student parties after a stabbing last fall. Ever since then, there has been talk from the administration about reopening Talley to allow students and their organizations to have parties once again. This summer, there was a task force established to examine ways to open Talley’s doors again.
Once again, the University is dragging its feet when it comes to doing something to benefit students. The task force was supposed to meet in the summer, but failed to do so because it had to find a new chair.
With Deb Luckadoo now the chair of the task force, it’s time to finally open the doors to student parties once again.
Talley student parties are a big deal to many organizations on campus. These parties aid in the fund-raising abilities of numerous student organizations. They provide a method of raising money for their groups by providing a fun and relatively safe avenue of entertainment.
These fund-raisers are held throughout the year, and the longer the University waits to make a decision, the more it hurts the wallets of these organizations. Time is money when it comes to reopening Talley to parties.
Fund-raising is not the only reason that Talley must be opened soon — the social aspect it brings to students is also important. There aren’t many options on campus for students to socialize and have fun, but a Talley party is a big one.
These socials have been a tradition here at State, one that brings alumni back to attend and to support the organizations. As a University, we don’t have many traditions, and the traditions we do have, we should hold. Talley parties are a successful tradition, and University administrators must keep this in mind when they are meeting to again allow the parties to resume.
We realize that solving safety concerns is important, but the University should stop dancing around and come up with a solution that satisfies all as soon as possible. Everyone involved with the task force needs to tackle this last roadblock — safety — and agree to a plan for new parties this semester.
It’s important that a student center be used for students not just for office space. Talley parties are a great way to keep it a student center. Now is the time to get the music pumping. Students shouldn’t have to wait any longer for a decision to be made.
