A select group of Student Government officials is working with University Dining to increase hours of operation in dining halls.
Though nothing has been finalized, the two parties have been in discussion and are trying to work out details and come to a decision.
College students are naturally prone to late nights. An increase in dining hours into the night would benefit students.
But a problem arises, as an increase in hours means an increase in funds University Dining will need. As long as more expensive meal plans don’t get out of hand, it is a worthy cause.
And to decrease the cost to Dining, a “fast track” meal late at night would be a good idea. When it’s getting late, students may not need the full meal options. They just want something quick to eat so they can get on their way.
Fountain would be the best dining hall at which to increase the hours. Students on East and Central campuses already have the Wolves’ Den in Talley Student Center as a late-night option. But if those in Lee, Sullivan and Bragaw want something late, it’s a lot more difficult.
The increased hours around exam time seem to be a success. So why not make it permanent?
This is something the SG officials are pushing for and say they can accomplish. They must keep on this issue, just like they’re doing for debit cards in C-Stores, and make this a reality.
Setting things in motion is one thing, but getting both debit cards and dining hall hours would really be an accomplishment to hang their hats on.
We applaud SG for focusing on issues they can have an impact on. We’re tired of the empty promises of lowering tuition and far-off fantasies.
These officials have realized their roles and are working to make a difference one issue at a time.
Students should encourage SG officials and University Dining personnel to show that we are for this shift — let them know what you want.
