This year, the Homecoming Committee announced Guster, the Avett Brothers and Brett Dennen as the line-up for this year’s Pack Howl concert and pep rally. The announcement comes two months before the concert, significantly earlier than last year’s announcement.
We commend the Homecoming Committee for not delaying in lining up a band for Pack Howl. This year marks an improvement over the delay-ridden announcement and lack of planning that plagued the Homecoming Committee last year and left us with Daughtry.
But, the Homecoming Committee needs to realize that while they are making progress toward making Homecoming — specifically, making Pack Howl — a success, they still have areas in which to improve.
Bringing in a nationally-known band would be one area that would improve the atmosphere. Students would be more willing to pay a few dollars more to see a Grammy-winning artist, such as recent headliners Ludacris and Lone Star, than $5 to see someone that maybe only a handful have heard of.
Maintaining a variety of genres is something that the Homecoming Committee must keep in mind for the future. The committee should return to the rotation of different styles of music. Every four years the same musical style should cycle through as to ensure that students are guaranteed to hear their preference of music at least once.
The last two years, the Homecoming Committee has sought to get bands that please everyone. In trying to satisfy everybody, the Committee is left with mediocre entertainers.
At a big university such as ours, it’s a privilege for our students to see a big name band for a reduced price. With the money that is spent at this University, we should be able to bring in a quality performer while at the same time keeping the cost minimal to students.
The Homecoming Committee is making strides in bringing a successful and entertaining performer to Pack Howl. They must continue to further their improvements, and maybe next year, we will see someone that has won a golden gramophone statuette.
