The men’s basketball team notched its second conference victory on Wednesday night, 70-59 against No. 16 Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies were 10-0 at home and 6-1 in the ACC on the season until the loss. They had defeated then No. 1 North Carolina at home and they beat No. 8 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium earlier in the season.
Sophomore forward Ben McCauley led N.C. State (12-8, 2-5 ACC) with 20 points while redshirt freshman Brandon Costner grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior guard Zabian Dowdell led Virginia Tech (16-6, 6-2 ACC) with 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
The Wolfpack took an early lead in the first half, but only led 30-28 at halftime. The Hokies were able to pull within two points at 55-53 with less than five minutes remaining. However, a Costner three-point basket expanded State’s lead to 58-53 and Virginia Tech would not get any closer.
The win comes only three days before the Wolfpack’s game against the Tar Heels, who earned a 105-64 win against Miami on Wednesday night.
