Kennard Nears, a graduate student, was arrested with possession of weapons Jan. 1 at E.S. King Village, according to Sgt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police.
Barnwell said Nears called Campus Police to report his wife.
“Nears called stating that he had a domestic issue between him and his wife,” Barnwell said.
According to the police report, Nears said his wife was leaving threatening messages on his cell phone.
The police, according to Barnwell, called his wife, Irene Gadegbeku, who then tipped police off that her husband possessed guns.
Barnwell said police had enough information to obtain a search warrant and once they searched Nears’ home, they located four handguns with ammunition.
“We seized the weapons and charged the individual with [possession] of weapons on [University property],” Barnwell said.
Gadegbeku, according to Barnwell, was not charged with anything because there was not enough information to charge her and Nears did not press charges.
“As far as his status as a student, the decision is up to the Office of Student Conduct,” Barnwell said.
According to the police report, the student was in possession of two semi-automatic pistols and two revolver pistols, along with multiple rounds of ammunition.
