Registration data reveals discontent of students on SGby Perry SafranStaff WriterThe Office of Student Affairs Research released Friday the partial results of a random student survey which showed that students indicated the actual role of student government was falling short of its goals.The survey was done in conjunction with the Self-Study Commission as part of the decennial evaluation of the University for re-accreditation purposes. The survey was conducted during Spring registration.Responses to questions concerning student government and its role at State showed a lack of confidence on the part of the student body in its effectiveness and actual role.

Virtual Classroom reaches distant collegeBy Trisha RossStaff WriterA concept once relegated to the far future has now become a reality. The video classroom has arrived at N.C. State.”Basically, what the technology is, is real-time multimedia over the Internet,” said Tom Miller, assistant dean for information technologies in the College of Engineering.The program utilized by NCSU’s Engineering department features a common whiteboard, sound, and video capabilities. Students at UNC-Asheville can watch and interact with their NCSU professor while he teaches the class. On-line office hours are even made available.

A spontaneous act is proving to be something big, and one N.C. State student is getting nervous.Oronde Pittman, a senior in sports management at NCSU, is a finalist for MTV’s “Road Rules” and “Real World.”One of 30 finalists, Pittman, 22, will be notified by MTV no later than Feb. 5 if he made the cut. On that day he will either be packing his bags to begin taping in Las Vegas, or he will be carrying on with life as he knows it.”It’s getting stressful now,” said Pittman. “I’m just ready for them to tell me yes or no.”

State’s Doak Field, the club has set up a campaign similar to the Global Line Drive that funded the improvements at Carter-Finley Stadium. This recently launched fundraiser, coined “Batter-Up,” will modernize the area surrounding the baseball field.As soon as the last home game of this season is played in May, the renovations will begin.”We’re building a whole new stadium basically,” said State head coach Elliot Avent. “Grandstands, locker room, clubhouse – those kinds of things.”A new fieldhouse will be conveniently located beside the field. It will house locker rooms, a weight room and an equipment room on the lower level. The upper level will serve as a players’ lounge and coaches’ office.
